Per-seat vs credits: which costs less?

There's no universal answer—it depends on usage. Here's the breakdown:

Per-seat pricing (OpenAI dots, Claude Tag, Lindy individual)

You pay a fixed amount per person per month. Predictable, but expensive if only one or two people use the agent heavily. With OpenAI dots at $100–$200/user/month, a 5-person team pays $500–$1,000/month even if only two people use it.

Credit-based pricing (Town, OpenTag)

You buy a pool of credits the whole team shares. Cheaper if usage is uneven, but harder to predict. OpenTag's Team plan starts at $50/month for 10k credits; you buy more as needed. Town's $99/month plan gives one person 300k credits—spread across five people, that's the equivalent of five $20/month subscriptions if usage is even.

Free plans (Geniusly, Town Free)

Geniusly offers a free plan for Slack teams. Town's free plan gives 30 chats/month per person. Both are worth trying before paying for a per-seat or credit plan.

Personal agents vs team agents: pricing isn't the only difference

Pricing aside, who can direct the agent? matters more than cost.

  • Personal agents (OpenAI dots, Instinct, Muse, Town's Townie): Each person gets their own agent. Only the owner can direct it. If your teammate needs help, they can't use your agent—they need their own.
  • Team agents (OpenTag, Claude Tag, Geniusly, Lindy's shared agents): One agent for the whole team. Anyone in an invited channel can @mention it and get work done.

For a team workflow where multiple people hand off work, a team agent is almost always better—even if the per-user pricing looks cheaper for personal agents. See Can you use Instinct, Muse or OpenAI dots for work? for the full comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheapest for a 5-person team?

Geniusly is free. OpenTag starts at $50/month for team credits. Town and Lindy's individual plans run $75–$500/month for five people. OpenAI dots cost $500–$1,000/month for five ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium seats.

Which agents have free plans?

Geniusly and Town offer free plans. OpenTag offers a 7-day trial (card required). Check each product for current free-tier limits.

Do I have to pay per person?

Not always. OpenTag and Lindy's team plans use shared credits. OpenAI dots, Claude Tag, and Lindy's individual plans are per-user.

What if I only need one person to use the agent?

A personal agent like a Town Townie ($15–$199/month for one person) or a credit-based team agent like OpenTag (from $50/month for the whole team) will be cheaper than paying $100–$200/month for one ChatGPT Pro seat.
