Asana Slack integration: what it does, how to set it up, and what it does not do

Alex T. 6 minute read

The Asana Slack integration lets you create Asana tasks from Slack messages, see AI-generated task summaries when links are pasted, receive task and project notifications in Slack, and unfurl Asana links with status and assignee details. A Slack workspace admin installs the app once, and then any Asana user can connect their account and set up notifications. What it does not do on its own is write a weekly status update for people outside your project; for that you need Asana status updates, project briefs, or an AI coworker that reads Asana and drafts the summary.

What does the Asana Slack integration do?

Per Asana's Slack integration page, the integration covers four main jobs:

How do you set up the Asana Slack integration?

  1. Install the Asana app in Slack. A Slack workspace admin installs the Asana app from the Slack App Directory or from Asana's integration page.
  2. Connect your Asana account. Each person who wants to use the integration clicks "Connect to Asana" in Slack and authorizes the connection. This links their Slack identity to their Asana account.
  3. Configure notifications. In Asana's notification settings, choose which task and project updates should post to Slack. You can send updates to a channel or receive them as Slackbot DMs.
  4. Enable Asana AI (optional). If your plan includes Asana AI, the "Summarize task" button appears when you paste Asana links in Slack. This feature is not available on all plans; check Asana pricing.
  5. Test it. Create a task from a Slack message, paste an Asana link to see the unfurl, and check that notifications arrive in the right channel.

How do Asana AI summaries work in Slack?

When you paste an Asana task link in Slack, the unfurl includes a "Summarize task" button. Click it, and Asana AI generates a summary of the task's status, recent activity, and key takeaways. This makes it faster to get caught up on cross-functional updates without switching to Asana, especially useful after time off or when joining a project mid-stream.

The feature requires Asana AI, which is included on Asana's Advanced and Enterprise plans, and available as an add-on on Starter. Check Asana's pricing page to confirm your plan includes it.

How do you keep Asana notifications from flooding Slack?

Asana notifications fire on every configured update, which can get loud. A few habits help:

  • Send project notifications to a dedicated channel like #asana-updates, not your main team channel.
  • Use portfolio and goal notifications for leadership, not task-level updates.
  • Turn off task-ID auto-replies in Asana's integration settings if threads get cluttered.
  • Use Asana's status update feature and have those post to Slack, rather than every task change.

What can't the Asana Slack integration do?

It reports events, not narrative. A stream of "Task completed" messages does not tell a founder or client what shipped this week, what is blocked, and why. Asana status updates help, but someone still has to write them.

It also only sees Asana. A real status update for stakeholders usually needs the merged pull requests from GitHub, the client email thread from Gmail, or the ad performance from Google Ads. That is the gap a cross-tool agent fills.

How do you get a weekly Asana summary in Slack?

Three options, depending on how much writing you want to do yourself:

  1. Status updates. Ask project leads to post a weekly status update in Asana; the integration sends it to the project's Slack channel.
  2. Portfolio notifications. Subscribe a Slack channel to a portfolio of "completed this week" projects, and have one person write a summary on top on Friday.
  3. An AI coworker. Ask an agent to read the week's Asana tasks and draft the update for you to review.

Geniusly is an AI coworker for your team in Slack. It reads the accounts you connect (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Slack, GitHub, Linear, and Google Ads) and prepares a brief, report, status update, or handoff for a person to review. Connected apps are read-only by default, except Google Sheets edits you explicitly ask for, and Slack messages beyond its reply are posted only after your approval. Anyone in a channel it has been invited to can ask it for work, it can run a task once, daily, or weekly, and it has a Free plan.

For Asana, that means a request like "every Friday at 3 pm, summarize what closed, what slipped and what is blocked in the Product team, and add merged PRs from GitHub." See the integrations page and the weekly operations brief use case, then get started with Geniusly free.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Asana Slack integration free?

Yes, the core Slack integration is available on all Asana plans, including the free Basic plan. The AI task summary feature requires Asana AI, which is included on Advanced and Enterprise plans, and available as an add-on on Starter.

Can I create Asana tasks from Slack?

Yes. Click the three-dot menu on any Slack message, choose "Create new issue," and select Asana. You can assign it, set a due date, and add it to a project.

Why are Asana links not unfurling in Slack?

Check that Slack's "Show text previews of linked websites" preference is on, and that you have connected your Asana account in Slack. Private Asana tasks may not unfurl for everyone in the channel.

Can the Asana Slack integration post a weekly summary?

Not automatically. You can use Asana's status update feature and have those post to Slack, or configure portfolio notifications for high-level updates, but a written weekly summary usually needs someone to draft it.

Does Asana work with Microsoft Teams?

Yes. Asana has a Microsoft Teams integration with similar features to the Slack integration. Check Asana's Microsoft Teams page for details.
