End-of-day report template: what to include, with examples

Alex T. 6 minute read

An end-of-day (EOD) report is a short note, usually five to ten lines, that tells your manager or team what you finished today, what is still in progress, what is blocked, and what you will do tomorrow. The best ones take under five minutes to write, link to the actual work instead of describing it, and flag blockers in the first line so they get seen. Below is a copy-ready EOD report template, three filled-in examples, and how to collect or draft EOD reports in Slack without another meeting.

What is an end-of-day report, and who needs one?

An EOD report is an asynchronous check-in sent at the end of each workday. It replaces the "what did you get done today?" conversation for teams that do not share an office or a time zone, and for people whose work is not visible in a tracker, like operations, account management, or support. Agencies often use EOD reports so an account lead can see where each client stands before the next morning. Remote teams use them so a manager in another time zone starts the day already caught up.

Not every team needs a daily report. If your work already shows up in Linear, Jira or GitHub, and a standup bot or weekly update covers the rest, a daily note can be noise. EOD reports earn their place when the work is spread across email, calls and documents that nobody else can see.

What should an EOD report include?

Five parts cover almost every role. Copy this template into a Slack message, a Workflow Builder form, or an email:

EOD report: [your name], [date]

Blockers: [anything you need from someone, with their @name, or "none"]

Done today:
- [finished item, with a link]
- [finished item, with a link]

In progress:
- [item]: [what is left] (expected [day])

Tomorrow:
- [top priority]
- [second priority]

FYI: [one line anyone should know, optional]

Put blockers first. If they sit at the bottom, people stop reading before they get there. Keep "done" to outcomes ("sent the Q4 proposal to Acme") rather than activity ("worked on proposal"). And link the work: a link to the doc, ticket or email thread lets the reader check it in one click.

What does a good EOD report look like?

Three short examples for different roles:

End-of-day report examples by role
RoleExample EOD report
Agency account managerBlockers: need final copy from @Dana for Bright Co ads by 10 am. Done: sent Acme the October report; booked Bright Co kickoff for Thu. In progress: Acme Q1 plan, outline done, draft Fri. Tomorrow: Bright Co brief; chase Acme invoice.
Operations leadBlockers: none. Done: payroll approved; renewed Notion plan; updated vendor tracker. In progress: new laptop policy, waiting on IT quote (Wed). Tomorrow: onboarding checklist for Monday's hire.
Software engineerBlockers: staging DB is down, flagged in #infra. Done: merged the billing fix (PR link); reviewed two PRs. In progress: export feature, tests left (Thu). Tomorrow: finish tests; pair on the search bug.

Each one fits in a Slack message without scrolling, and each tells the reader exactly what to do, if anything.

What are the most common EOD report mistakes?

  • Listing activity, not outcomes. "Meetings, emails, calls" tells the reader nothing.
  • Burying the blocker. If you need something, lead with it and tag the person.
  • Writing a diary. More than ten lines usually means it should be a doc or a conversation.
  • Reporting into a void. If nobody reads or replies, the team will stop writing them. A manager who reacts, even with an emoji, keeps the habit alive.
  • Using it as surveillance. EOD reports work as a coordination tool. Used to count hours, they become padded.

How do you collect EOD reports in Slack?

Three common setups, from simplest to most automated:

  1. A channel and a habit. Create #eod, pin the template, and ask everyone to post before they log off. Free, but people forget.
  2. Slack Workflow Builder. A scheduled workflow can post a reminder or open a form at 5 pm each weekday and send answers to a channel, per Slack's Workflow Builder guide. Our Workflow Builder examples show the form setup. Workflow Builder collects what people type; it does not write anything for them.
  3. An AI coworker that drafts it. Instead of writing from memory, ask an agent to draft your EOD report from the systems where the work already happened, then edit and post it.

Can AI write your end-of-day report?

It can write a solid first draft if the work left a trail. An agent that can read your connected tools can list the Linear issues you closed, the GitHub pull requests you merged, the Gmail threads you replied to, and the rows you changed in a Google Sheet, then format them into the template above. What it cannot know is the conversation in the hallway or the call nobody wrote down, so the person still edits the draft before posting.

Geniusly is an AI coworker for your team in Slack. It reads the accounts you connect (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Slack, GitHub, Linear, and Google Ads) and prepares a brief, report, status update, or handoff for a person to review. Connected apps are read-only by default, except Google Sheets edits you explicitly ask for, and Slack messages beyond its reply are posted only after your approval. Anyone in a channel it has been invited to can ask it for work, it can run a task once, daily, or weekly, and it has a Free plan.

For an EOD report, a scheduled request like "every weekday at 5 pm, draft my EOD report from my Linear issues, GitHub pull requests and Gmail sent today" gets you a draft to correct in under a minute. The same approach scales up to the weekly status report and the client status update. Get started with Geniusly free.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EOD report?

An end-of-day report is a short daily note listing what you finished, what is in progress, what is blocked, and what is next. Teams use it to stay in sync without a daily meeting, especially across time zones.

How long should an end-of-day report be?

Five to ten lines is enough for most roles. If it runs longer, the detail probably belongs in a document or a ticket that the report links to.

What is the difference between an EOD report and a daily standup?

A standup is usually a live meeting or a morning check-in about the day ahead. An EOD report is written at the end of the day about what actually happened. Some teams use one or the other, not both.

How do I send an EOD report in Slack?

Post it in a shared #eod channel, use a Slack Workflow Builder form on a weekday schedule to collect answers, or have an AI coworker draft it from your connected tools and edit it before posting.

Should managers require daily EOD reports?

Only if the work is not visible elsewhere. Teams whose work already lives in a tracker often get more from a weekly status update than from daily reports.
