Linear Slack integration: what it does, how to set it up, and what it does not do
The Linear Slack integration lets you create Linear issues from Slack messages, sync comment threads both ways, send team, project and personal notifications to Slack, unfurl Linear links, and mention @Linear in a thread to file bugs or ask questions about your workspace. A Linear admin connects it once in Linear's integration settings, and then any Linear user can set up their own notifications. What it does not do on its own is write a readable weekly summary for people outside engineering; for that you need project updates, Linear's Loops, or an AI coworker that reads Linear.
What does the Linear Slack integration do?
Per Linear's Slack docs, the integration covers five jobs:
| Feature | What it does | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| @Linear agent | Mention @Linear in a thread to file a bug, turn a thread into feature requests, or ask who works on an area | Linear users in Slack; invite it first in private channels |
| Create issue from a message | More actions, Connect to apps, Create new issue; up to 10 admin-chosen templates | Linear users only (non-users can use Linear Asks on Business and Enterprise) |
| Synced threads | Comments stay in sync between the Linear issue and the Slack thread, and the thread updates when the issue is done | Public channels, or private channels after /invite @Linear; not DMs |
| Notifications | Team, project, initiative, view and personal notifications posted to a channel or DM | Any user, once an admin connects Slack |
| Unfurls and actions | Links show title, status and assignee; you can assign, comment or subscribe from Slack | Public teams only; private team links never unfurl |

How do you set up the Linear Slack integration?
- Connect the workspace. A Linear admin (or owner, on Enterprise) opens Settings, Integrations, Slack in Linear and connects the Slack workspace. Your Slack admin may need to approve the app.
- Turn on team notifications. In each team's Slack notification settings, pick the channel that should get issue creation, comments, status changes and project updates.
- Add project channels if you use them. Admins can have Linear create a public Slack channel for each new project, invite its members, and post project updates there.
- Invite @Linear where you need it. Public channels work directly; private channels need
/invite @Linear. - Write agent guidance. In the Slack integration settings, tell the @Linear agent how your channels map to teams and projects and which status new issues should get.
- Set personal notifications. Each person can route their Linear inbox to Slack DMs from Settings, Personal, Notifications.
How do you keep Linear notifications from flooding Slack?
Team notifications fire on every issue change, which gets loud fast. A few habits help:
- Send team notifications to a dedicated channel like #eng-linear, not your main team channel.
- Use project or view notifications for stakeholders: a view subscription can post only when an issue is added or completed.
- Turn off issue-ID auto-replies in the Slack integration settings if threads get cluttered.
- Use project updates, not issue noise, for anyone outside engineering.
What can't the Linear Slack integration do?
It reports events, not meaning. A stream of "status changed to Done" messages does not tell a founder or client what shipped this week, what slipped, and why. Project updates help, but someone still has to write them. Linear's newer Loops can post to public Slack channels and run on new messages, which covers some automation, but the summary is only as good as the setup.
It also only sees Linear. A real status update usually needs the merged pull requests from GitHub, the client thread from Gmail, or the numbers in a Google Sheet. That is the gap a cross-tool agent fills; our guide to turning a Linear or GitHub week into a stakeholder update walks through the full process.
How do you get a weekly Linear summary in Slack?
Three options, depending on how much writing you want to do yourself:
- Project updates. Ask project leads to post a weekly update in Linear; the integration sends it to the project channel.
- A view subscription plus a human. Subscribe a channel to a "completed this week" view and have one person write three lines on top on Friday.
- An AI coworker. Ask an agent to read the week's Linear issues and draft the update for you to review.
Geniusly is an AI coworker for your team in Slack. It reads the accounts you connect (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Slack, GitHub, Linear, and Google Ads) and prepares a brief, report, status update, or handoff for a person to review. Connected apps are read-only by default, except Google Sheets edits you explicitly ask for, and Slack messages beyond its reply are posted only after your approval. Anyone in a channel it has been invited to can ask it for work, it can run a task once, daily, or weekly, and it has a Free plan.
For Linear, that means a request like "every Friday at 3 pm, summarize what closed, what slipped and what is blocked in the Platform team, and add merged PRs from GitHub." It works alongside the Linear integration rather than replacing it. See the integrations page and the weekly operations brief use case, then get started with Geniusly free.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Linear Slack integration free?
Linear's pricing page does not list the core Slack integration as a paid add-on. The plan-gated pieces are Linear Asks for non-Linear users (Business and Enterprise) and connecting multiple Slack workspaces (Enterprise).
Can people without a Linear account create issues from Slack?
Not with the standard integration; only Linear users can. Linear Asks, on Business and Enterprise plans, lets non-Linear users in Slack submit requests.
How do I create a Linear issue from Slack?
Mention @Linear in the thread, for example "@Linear file a bug, assign me", or use More actions, Connect to apps, Create new issue on the message. The /linear slash command also works outside threads.
Why aren't Linear links unfurling in Slack?
Links from private Linear teams never unfurl. Also check that Slack's "Show text previews of linked websites" preference is on, and if you installed Linear Asks before the main integration, reconnect them in the order Linear's docs describe.
Can the Linear Slack integration post a weekly summary?
It posts project updates and notifications, not a written summary. For a weekly summary, have project leads write updates, subscribe a channel to a completed-issues view, or use an AI agent that reads Linear and drafts it.
