Monday.com Slack integration: what it does, how to set it up, and what it does not do

Alex T. 6 minute read

The monday.com Slack integration lets you create monday items from Slack messages, sync board updates to Slack channels, send notifications, and mention @monday.com in a thread to have the agent read context and take board actions without leaving Slack. A monday.com admin connects it once in the Integrations Center, and then any user can set up notifications and use the agent. What it does not do on its own is write a readable weekly summary for people outside your team; for that you need project updates, monday.com automations, or an AI coworker that reads monday.com and drafts the summary.

What does the monday.com Slack integration do?

Per monday.com's Slack integration docs, the integration covers five main jobs:

How do you set up the monday.com Slack integration?

  1. Connect the workspaces. A monday.com admin opens Integrations in the admin section and connects the Slack workspace. Your Slack admin may need to approve the app.
  2. Update to the latest app version. The @monday.com agent requires the latest version of the Slack app. Install or update it from monday.com's integration page.
  3. Enable AI and connector permissions. For the agent to work, AI must be enabled on your account, and the monday Slack agent must be permitted in the AI permissions tab in the admin section.
  4. Authenticate the first time. The first time you mention @monday.com in Slack, you will be asked to complete a quick authentication flow that grants the agent permission to act on your behalf.
  5. Set up board notifications. In monday.com, configure which board updates should post to which Slack channels. You can notify on new items, status changes, due date updates, and more.
  6. Add workflow blocks (Pro and Enterprise). Use Slack integration blocks in monday.com's workflow builder to send notifications, create channels, or invite users automatically.

How does the @monday.com agent work in Slack?

The @monday.com agent reads the context of the Slack thread and replies in the same thread once it has completed the request. You can use it in any channel, in a group chat, or in a direct message with the monday.com app. Each request runs under the identity and permissions of the person who sent it, so the agent can only see and modify what you have access to in monday.com.

The agent consumes monday AI credits. It is treated as an AI connector, so admins can enable or disable it, and users must have AI connector permissions turned on. Anyone in the same Slack thread can mention @monday.com to trigger the agent.

According to monday.com's AI stack announcement, you can also work with monday.com from Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, and other tools via the monday.com MCP (Model Context Protocol) connection, which lets you update boards and get information without leaving those apps.

How do you keep monday.com notifications from flooding Slack?

Board notifications fire on every configured update, which can get loud fast. A few habits help:

  • Send board notifications to a dedicated channel like #monday-updates, not your main team channel.
  • Use workflow automations with filters to send only high-priority updates (e.g., when a status changes to "Blocked" or "Urgent").
  • Limit notifications to status changes and due dates, not every comment or update.
  • Use the @monday.com agent in threads to pull status on demand, rather than pushing every change automatically.

What can't the monday.com Slack integration do?

It reports events, not meaning. A stream of "Item created" and "Status changed to Done" messages does not tell a founder or client what shipped this week, what is at risk, and why. monday.com has automation and AI features that can generate summaries, but someone still has to configure the workflows and write the prompts.

The integration also only sees monday.com. A real status update usually needs the merged pull requests from GitHub, the client thread from Gmail, or the ad spend numbers from Google Ads. That is the gap a cross-tool agent fills.

How do you get a weekly monday.com summary in Slack?

Three options, depending on how much writing you want to do yourself:

  1. Project updates in monday.com. Use the Updates section on boards or use Pulse views, and have those post to Slack channels automatically.
  2. Workflow automations. Build a workflow that runs every Friday, queries board data, and posts a summary to Slack using the workflow builder's Slack blocks.
  3. An AI coworker. Ask an agent to read the week's monday.com items and draft the update for you to review.

Geniusly is an AI coworker for your team in Slack. It reads the accounts you connect (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Slack, GitHub, Linear, and Google Ads) and prepares a brief, report, status update, or handoff for a person to review. Connected apps are read-only by default, except Google Sheets edits you explicitly ask for, and Slack messages beyond its reply are posted only after your approval. Anyone in a channel it has been invited to can ask it for work, it can run a task once, daily, or weekly, and it has a Free plan.

For monday.com, that means a request like "every Friday at 3 pm, summarize what closed, what slipped and what is blocked on the Q4 Launch board." See the integrations page and the weekly operations brief use case, then get started with Geniusly free.

Frequently asked questions

Is the monday.com Slack integration free?

The core Slack integration is available on all monday.com plans, including the free plan. The @monday.com agent requires AI to be enabled, and workflow automation blocks require Pro or Enterprise plans.

Can the @monday.com agent create items from Slack?

Yes. Mention @monday.com in a Slack thread and ask it to create an item, update a status, or query board data. It reads the thread context and acts under your monday.com permissions.

How do I stop monday.com from posting every update to Slack?

In monday.com, configure board notifications to send only specific update types (status changes, due dates) to Slack, and send them to a dedicated updates channel rather than your main team channel.

Can the monday.com Slack integration post a weekly summary?

Not automatically. You can use workflow automations to trigger a summary on a schedule, or use the @monday.com agent to pull status on demand, but a human-readable weekly summary usually needs someone to write it or an AI agent to draft it.

Does monday.com work with Microsoft Teams?

Yes. monday.com has a Microsoft Teams integration with similar features to the Slack integration. Check monday.com's support docs for details.
