Claude Cowork vs Claude Tag: which one does your team need?

Alex T. 7 minute read

Claude Cowork and Claude Tag are both Anthropic products, but they solve different problems. Claude Cowork is a personal work agent inside the Claude app: one person hands it a task, it works through files and connected tools, and it can run scheduled tasks. Claude Tag is a shared @Claude in Slack: an owner sets it up once, and anyone in an approved channel can tag it, with usage billed to the organization. Cowork is included with every paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise); Claude Tag is in beta on Team and Enterprise only. If one person needs leverage, start with Cowork. If a channel full of people needs to hand off work, look at Claude Tag or another shared agent.

What is the difference between Claude Cowork and Claude Tag?

The simplest test is who gives the instructions. In Claude Cowork, you do: it runs in Claude Desktop, and on web and mobile for most paid plans, and it works for the person who started the session. In Claude Tag, the channel does: Claude works under its own identity, everyone in a channel works with the same Claude, and anyone can steer it or pick up where someone else left off.

How much do Claude Cowork and Claude Tag cost?

Cowork has no separate price; it comes with the Claude plan. Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 billed annually), Max starts at $100, and the Team plan is $25 per member a month for a Standard seat ($20 billed annually) or $125 for a Premium seat ($100 annually), with a two-member minimum. Agent runs draw on the same usage allowance as chat, so heavy Cowork use can hit limits sooner than chat alone.

One naming note: Anthropic's pricing page now says "Claude Cowork is now just Claude," with chat and Cowork merging into one experience that is rolling out to Pro and Max first. The agent features are the same; you may simply not see a separate Cowork tab.

Claude Tag is consumption-based on top of a Team or Enterprise plan. Anthropic's help article says owners can set an organization-wide hard cap, per-channel limits, and alerts at 75% and 95%. Work that would go over a limit is declined rather than cut short. Tagging Claude in a channel bills the organization; DMing Claude bills your own account.

Can Claude Cowork work in Slack?

Partly. Cowork can read and write Slack through the Slack plugin, which connects to the official Slack MCP server: it can summarize channels, find discussions, draft standups and announcements, and compose messages. On Team and Enterprise, an owner enables the connector and each person authenticates, per Claude's connector docs.

What Cowork does not do is sit in your channels as a teammate others can ask. The request starts in one person's Claude, and the output lands where that person sends it. Since August 3, 2026, the older per-user Claude in Slack app has been replaced by Claude Tag, which is the product built for in-channel work.

Which one should a small team choose?

  1. One or two power users, mostly documents and research: Claude Cowork on Pro or Max. It is the cheapest way to get an agent that works through files and connected apps.
  2. A team on Claude Team that wants a shared @Claude in Slack: add Claude Tag, start with one channel, and set a per-channel cap before you invite everyone.
  3. A team not on Claude, or one that wants a tool scoped to a few recurring jobs: a third-party Slack agent avoids buying Claude seats just to get a shared agent.

Both can do one thing the other cannot. Cowork works on local files and long, multi-step projects one person is steering. Claude Tag keeps the request, the work and the corrections visible to everyone in the channel.

What if your team is not on a Claude plan?

Claude Tag needs at least two Claude Team seats, so a ten-person team pays for Claude seats before the first tag. Other shared Slack agents bill differently: per workspace (Viktor, OpenTag, Runbear), per person plus usage (the Every Agent), or a free plan to start. We compared them in Claude Tag alternatives and Claude Tag vs OpenTag vs ChatGPT Agents, and explained the underlying split in personal vs shared AI agents.

Geniusly is an AI coworker for your team in Slack. It reads the accounts you connect (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Sheets, Slack, GitHub, Linear, and Google Ads) and prepares a brief, report, status update, or handoff for a person to review. Connected apps are read-only by default, except Google Sheets edits you explicitly ask for, and Slack messages beyond its reply are posted only after your approval. Anyone in a channel it has been invited to can ask it for work, it can run a task once, daily, or weekly, and it has a Free plan.

It is a fit when the shared work is recurring: the weekly status update, a client brief, a KPI post from a Google Sheet, or a handoff. Get started with Geniusly free.
